We believe that tamariki should feel the aroha (love) and koa ana (joy) as soon as they walk into our space. We pride ourselves on providing a home-away-from-home and we ensure that the heart is at the centre of all that we do.
ABC Mount Eden provides a nurturing and respectful environment for tamariki where they are trusted to take their own steps along their own unique learning journey. In our place we take play very seriously, it is through play that our tamariki are able to explore, extend and develop themselves, their theories and their opinions of the world around us. We are blessed to have a ‘wild urban space’ growing in our garden and we are always looking for ways to get outside and fill ourselves with the sights and sounds of nature.
We base everything that we do around our core values of Aroha (love), joy, play, respect and trust. This helps us to ensure that we always place the tamariki at the centre of our aspirations.
Aroha (Love) – We believe that our tamariki, whanau and kaiako deserve an environment of caring, loving and reciprocal relationships. Our practice is heart-centred and nurturing; leading to interactions that are warm and heartfelt and an environment that is cared for and full of thoughtful provocations that create a home-from-home for our tamariki.
Joy – Our tamariki, kaiako and whanau will have a beautiful environment that will be rich with creativity, exploration and emotional well-being for all. We strive to make our hearts sing every day and believe that joy can be found among the sounds of Mother Nature as well as in our responsive environments.
Play – Our place provides an environment where we are challenged and motivated to lead our own learning. Resources are open-ended and we strive to use the language of learning to encourage experimentation, involvement and a ‘can do’ culture, all of which are imperative for holistic development.
Respect – We believe that everyone is capable and competent. To this end we provide an inclusive place that is reflective of the cultural heritage of Aotearoa New Zealand and our own, ABC Mount Eden, community. This wider world, as Te Whariki reminds us, is an integral part of ECE.
Trust – We provide an environment that allows time and space so that everyone can unfold in their own unique way. We listen to and take our cues from the tamariki and shape the experiences and opportunities we provide to enable our tamariki to be empowered to learn and grow.
Pipi is the home of our youngest tamariki, who can start with us from 3 months. During the first few years of a baby’s life relationships are the key to success, development, growth and a peaceful infant. We enable this in Pipi by following a primary care-giving system, which is based around the principles of RIE and the lessons we have learnt from Dr Emmi Pickler and Magda Gerber.
Paua is the home of our older tamariki where we foster their growth and development until they go to school at 5. From around the age of 2 our environment in Paua and our kaiako enable our tamariki to extend and challenge themselves. Our focus is on developing key competencies and dispositions such as independence, resilience, perseverance and creativity which will inspire a passion for life-long learning in our tamariki.
Our unique Be School Ready initiative has been developed to ensure that children leave the centre as confident, capable learners and prepared for the next step in their education journey.
We want children to play happily and harmoniously together, offering them ways to solve problems through consistent and shared values – with respect, with love/aroha.
